In Sudoku X, the diagonals matter first only when they cut a square down further than its row, column, or box already does. Treat each diagonal as an extra house, not as a magic shortcut. The best move is still the one with the fewest legal candidates.

If you already know the Sudoku X rules, the trap is overvaluing the new lines. A diagonal sudoku looks busy because 17 squares belong to a diagonal, and the centre belongs to both. That does not mean those squares are always urgent. A corner on a diagonal can be decisive. It can also be ordinary if its row and box have already done the work.

  4. Mark diagonal intersections with tight boxes. A diagonal square inside a box with many filled cells deserves attention. Reason: the box may leave 2 candidates, and the diagonal may delete one. Wrong move: working a diagonal square in an empty box while a non-diagonal box has an obvious hidden single.
  5. Only then scan ordinary singles. Reason: the earlier checks stop you missing a quick Sudoku X reduction. Wrong move: refusing an ordinary naked single because it is off the diagonal. A solved square is a solved square.

When does a diagonal clue help, and when does it mislead you?

A diagonal clue helps when it removes something unique. Suppose a diagonal is missing 2, 5, and 8, and one open diagonal square sits in a row that already contains 5 and a box that already contains 8. That square is 2. The reason is that the diagonal supplied the short list, then the ordinary houses finished the job. The wrong move is reversing that logic and assuming every square on that diagonal should now be attacked. Only the square whose other houses matter is ready.

Before you place the number, name the candidate the diagonal removed. If you cannot name it, the diagonal has not proved the move.
