What Is the House Edge in Blackjack, Exactly?

Blackjack’s quoted edge only means something with rules attached: decks, soft 17, payout, doubling, surrender and basic strategy all matter.

Under a well-specified six-deck rule set, the blackjack house edge is about 0.4% with correct basic strategy. That assumes the dealer stands on soft 17, blackjack pays 3:2, doubling after a split is allowed, and surrender is not available.

That figure is not the chance the dealer beats you on the next hand. It is the long-run expected loss per initial bet after wins, losses, pushes, blackjacks, doubles and splits have all been counted. Bet £100 in total initial stakes at a 0.4% edge and the expected cost is 40p. You can still win the next hand. You can win the next hour. The edge is a long-run average, not a timetable.

The awkward part is that blackjack pages often quote one clean number without naming the rules behind it. That makes the number hard to check. Change 3:2 to 6:5 and the game moves from the low 0.4% benchmark towards the 1.8% example shown below. Make the dealer hit soft 17 and the edge moves again. The maths is useful only when the rule set is nailed down.

What is the house edge, exactly?

House edge is the casino’s average profit, expressed as a percentage of your initial bet, if the same rule set is played for a very large number of hands. In blackjack, that number assumes a particular strategy. The usual quoted figure assumes correct basic strategy, not guesses, hunches or copying the dealer.

For a six-deck game where the dealer stands on soft 17, blackjack pays 3:2, double after split is allowed, and there is no surrender, the house edge is about 0.4% with basic strategy. Put another way, £1,000 in initial bets has an expected loss of £4 under those rules.

The word expected does heavy work. Expected value is not a forecast for your next session. It is the weighted average of every possible result: ordinary wins, ordinary losses, pushes, blackjacks, doubles, splits and hands where the dealer also has blackjack. A double-down loss hurts more than a normal loss, but the double is made only in situations where the maths says the extra stake is worth it.

House edge is also not the same as hit rate. Blackjack players lose more hands than they win, because pushes exist and because blackjack payouts do some of the repairing. A 3:2 blackjack payout is one of the main reasons the edge can sit near 0.4% under good six-deck rules. Cut that payout and the edge jumps, even if every card is dealt in the same order.

An edge quoted without rules is incomplete. These figures assume correct basic strategy and use the conventional house edge per initial bet.

Rounded to one decimal, small rules can look equal even when they are not. The direction still matters. A 6:5 payout is not a cosmetic difference; it changes the game far more than most table rules.

How do you turn house edge into money at the table?

  1. Start with initial bets, not hands. House edge is normally quoted per initial stake. If you play 100 hands at £10 each, your initial-bet volume is £1,000. Doubles and splits create extra money on the table, but the standard edge figure has already allowed for the situations where they occur.
  2. Multiply by the edge. At 0.4% under the six-deck 3:2 stand-on-soft-17 baseline, £1,000 in initial bets has an expected loss of £4. At 1.8% under the same rules with a 6:5 blackjack payout, the same £1,000 has an expected loss of £18.
  3. Separate expectation from cash swings. A £10 player can easily be up or down many units in a short spell. Blackjack has lower volatility than many casino games because pushes, doubles and choices spread the results out, but the next 20 hands still do not owe you the average.
  4. Use the figure to compare games. If two tables are otherwise alike and one pays 3:2 while the other pays 6:5, the 3:2 table is the better mathematical deal. No betting pattern fixes a worse rule set.
  5. Keep the strategy assumption honest. The 0.4% quote is a basic-strategy quote. If you stand on hands that should hit, refuse profitable doubles, or split the wrong pairs, your personal edge is worse than the table edge.

Where do blackjack odds and blackjack RTP fit in?

Blackjack odds are the probabilities underneath the house edge. They answer questions such as how often you draw a natural blackjack, how often a dealer busts from a given up-card, or how often a pair split improves the hand. In a six-deck shoe, the chance your first two cards are a natural blackjack is about 4.7%. That fact matters because naturals are paid at a bonus rate under 3:2 rules.

Expected value joins those odds to the payout. A hand can be less likely to win but still be the right play if the payoff or saved loss is better. Doubling 11 against a weak dealer card is the familiar example: you risk more because the distribution of future cards makes the extra stake profitable on average.

Blackjack RTP is the same idea turned round from the player’s side. If the house edge is 0.4% for the six-deck 3:2 stand-on-soft-17 baseline with basic strategy, the blackjack RTP is 99.6%. If the edge is 1.8% for the same game with 6:5 blackjacks, the RTP is 98.2%.

RTP can sound more generous because it is a larger number. It is not a different measurement. A 99.6% RTP means the long-run expected return is £99.60 from £100 of initial bets under that exact rule set and strategy assumption. It says nothing about whether the next shoe is kind.

If a friend asked which blackjack number to remember before choosing a table, I would give them the edge and the habit that goes with it. The payout line matters most. A table that pays 6:5 can look identical for five quiet hands, then take value away on the very hand that should be your premium result. Soft 17 matters too, but it is smaller. Surrender is useful, but only if you actually use it in the right places. Basic strategy is not decoration; it is part of the quoted maths.

Do not use house edge as a promise about tonight. Use it as a price tag. If the price is low, you are still buying variance, just at a fairer rate. If the price is high, a lucky run can still happen, but the game is charging more for the same entertainment. The cards will be noisy. The rules are not.
