How Many Free Cells Do You Actually Need?

Keep cells open for mobility, value empty columns correctly, and use the move-capacity formula before starting a long rearrangement.

You usually need 2 free cells open, not all of them. With 2 cells and 1 empty column, you can move 6 ordered cards in standard FreeCell. With no spare cell, even a tidy-looking position can lock within 3 moves.

The useful question is not how many free cells are printed on the board. It is how many you can afford to spend before the next forced extraction: the buried ace, the needed two, the king that must start a column, or the card that releases a run.

Count free cells before you move, then count them again after the move you want to make. If the second count is lower and no card has reached a foundation or opened a column, you have probably bought shape with debt. Sometimes that is correct. Often it is tidy losing play. Use a harsher test: a move that spends space must uncover something, send something home, or create a column you can use.

So how many free cells do you actually need to solve this deal?

Start with 2 open cells as the default. One is emergency space. The second is working space. Together they let you uncover a blocker, park a single card, and still reverse a mistake without spending a whole empty column.

The reason is mechanical. A free cell does not solve anything by itself; it buys a temporary violation of order. If you spend the last free cell, every next move must either go to a foundation, fit exactly onto a column, or create an empty column. That is a narrow set of exits.

This heuristic is wrong when the filled cell immediately creates more capacity. If putting a black five into a free cell lets you move a red six, expose a low ace, and then clear a column, take it. The cell is not spent; it is invested for a known return.

Then ask for 1 empty column before you attempt a long rearrangement. In standard FreeCell, the FreeCell moves formula for moving an ordered run is usually written as (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns). With 2 free cells and 1 empty column, that is 6 cards. With 0 free cells and 1 empty column, it is 2 cards. The difference is the deal.

The formula is wrong as a comfort blanket. It assumes the run is already correctly ordered for the destination and that your empty columns are genuinely usable. In a kings-only empty-column game, or when the only empty column must receive a specific king, the raw number overstates what you can do.

Which empty column matters more than another free cell?

An empty column is worth more than another free cell when it lets you move a stack, not a card. Decide by asking what the column can actually hold on the next move.

Before you fill the column, name the next card it receives and the card it frees. If you cannot name both, hold the column open or spend a cell instead.

How do you use the free cell count to judge a move before you make it?

  1. Count open free cells after the move, not before it. Reason: the after-count is the position you must play. Wrong move: rejecting a cell-filling move that also sends 2 cards to the foundations and restores the cell at once.
  2. Apply the FreeCell moves formula before moving a run. Reason: (free cells + 1) × 2^(empty columns) tells you the maximum ordered run you can shift in standard FreeCell. Wrong move: using the number when the destination colour or rank is illegal.
  3. Require a visible exit for every parked card. Reason: a free cell holding a card with no planned landing square is a blocked lane. Wrong move: refusing to park a high card that can later sit on its matching lower sequence after one known move.
  4. Prefer moves that create new legal moves over moves that look tidy. Reason: aligning colours or suits without exposing cards does not increase capacity. Wrong move: ignoring tidiness when it completes a same-suit run that can be moved safely as a unit.
  5. Spend the last free cell only for a forced gain. Reason: at 0 free cells, every loose card becomes expensive. Wrong move: never spending it; some deals need a last-cell move to uncover the only ace or open the first column.
  6. Undo the plan mentally for 3 moves. Reason: if you cannot reverse the sequence, you are relying on luck rather than structure. Wrong move: overvaluing reversibility when the move sends cards permanently to safe foundations.

FreeCell asks: how much temporary space do I have? Eight Off asks: which suit path can I clear without wasting the eight cells? The count still matters, but the legal shape of the empty columns changes the value of that count.

The move to distrust is the one that makes the board look calmer while reducing your choices. A clean tableau with 0 free cells is often worse than a messy tableau with 2 cells and an empty column. The mess still moves.

Before committing, say the cost out loud in your head: this uses 1 cell and opens no column. This uses the column but frees an ace. This fills the last cell, but the card has a landing square in 2 moves. If you cannot state the repayment, do not take the loan.

Good players do not preserve free cells forever. They spend them with receipts. They know which card is being released, where the parked card will go, and whether the empty column is a workshop or a museum piece.

Eight Off is especially good for learning that discipline because extra cells can flatter you. Four open spaces feel safe. Then a suit bottleneck appears, the kings are buried, and all that space has become storage. The better habit is colder: count the spaces, name the exits, and make the move that leaves the next move possible.
